It’s hard to believe that you’d find a rum distillery in a city dubbed ‘The Forest City.’ But believe it. The good friends behind Portland, Maine’s Three of Strong Spirits are reinvigorating New England’s rum-making history that dates back to the 17th century. Life is short, so Three of Strong Spirits is spreading joy with award-winning craft spirits.
Friends Dave McConnell and Sam Pierce have had conversations about starting businesses together for years. It wasn’t until they thought about distilling world-class rums that something stuck. They’d make rums that highlight the community, camaraderie and sense of adventure that living in Maine entails. Bringing on Head Distiller Graham Hamblett solidified the plan, and Three of Strong Spirits was founded in 2019.
The rum-centric distillery has plans for a sugar-cane based gin, but until that day comes, you’ll have to enjoy their award-winning rums. From Brightwater Silver Rum to the Nightwater Dark Rum, Three of Strong Spirits crafts their rum from organic evaporated cane syrup, molasses and crisp water from Sebago Lake.

The Brightwater Daiquiri

  • 2 oz. Brightwater Rum
  • 1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
  • .75 oz. Simple Syrup
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.

The Stone Pier & Tonic

  • 2 oz. Stone Pier Rum
  • 1-3 Lime Wedges
  • 3-4 oz. Tonic Water
Pour Three of Strong Spirits Stone Pier Rum in a highball glass with lots of ice. Squeeze lime wedges over the rum and drop them in the glass. Add tonic water and give it a quick stir.

Merrymeeting Highball

  • 2 oz. Merrymeeting Spiced Rum
  • 4 oz. Soda Water
  • Orange Slice
Pour Three of Strong Merrymeeting Spiced Rum in a tall glass over crushed ice. Add soda water, stir, and garnish with an orange slice.
