Jacob Wiviott: Titan Of Ready-To-Drink Cocktails

For Titan Craft Cocktails, the future of the craft movement is all about, “less bartending, more enjoying”

What is a titan?

According to owner Jacob Wiviott at Titan Craft Cocktails, a titan is, “one who stands out for their greatness of achievement.”

If there’s one thing that Jacob, and his father and co-founder, Jay, have been doing since November of 2017, it’s making a name for themselves by standing out in the craft community with some of the best bottled cocktails around.

Because what’s happening at this Austin, Texas-based business is different to what goes on at most independent distilleries.

“Our process of barrel-aging isn’t a unique process in the grand scheme of things,” Jacob admits. “It’s how we make literally every aged spirit.”

But there’s something more happening at Titan Craft Cocktails.

Jacob and his father aren’t simply aging newly distilled craft spirits. They’re aging fully realized and expertly mixed ready-to-drink cocktails.

He explains the distinction, “With cocktails, it’s a different story. Putting an already made cocktail back into the barrel allows all of the components of the cocktail to mingle, and truly blend into each other.”

“This process fundamentally transforms these cocktails into a unique sensory experience.”

Through experimenting with classic recipes and introducing them to the barrel-aging process, Jacob has helped position himself at the forefront of a unique, and increasingly popular adjunct of the craft spirit movement: the ready-to-drink cocktail.

Locally-inspired bottled cocktails

“To really understand the culture of a region, you have to explore its food scene and

its beverage scene.” That’s Jacob’s belief.

And he’s not shy about crediting his hometown for sparking the fire behind his vision for Titan Craft Cocktails.

“The city of Austin has been an ever-expanding hub for new ideas, and as cocktail

forward bars have been popping up around the area, so has the concept of barrel-aging those very cocktails.”

It was there in Austin where Jacob had his very first encounter with bottled cocktails that had been barrel aged.

He tells the story like this: “My first experience with a barrel-aged cocktail was an aged Manhattan.”

“At the time I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Manhattan,” Jacob confessed. “I was more of an Old Fashioned guy, personally.”

“But the depth and complexity of that cocktail floored me. It had a significantly smooth mouthfeel, was rich and well balanced, and challenged my preconceptions on how you can build a cocktail.”

That was the lightning bolt moment.

“It was from this point on that I knew I had to share this with the rest of the U.S.”

Jacob continues, “I got into this industry because of the urge to share these cocktails with others. I tinkered with these recipes more as a project during those summer months after I graduated.”

But before long, that ‘tinkering’ blossomed into a full bore business plan for Titan Craft Cocktails.

“As I got deeper into the process, I truly felt I had a great product to present

to the world. After consulting with those I love, it felt like the right decision to turn this into a full on business.”

Ready-to-drink cocktails straight from Austin, Texas

Titan Craft Cocktails touts their ready-to-drink cocktails as both “decadent and practical”, designed to suit their company motto of, “Less bartending. More enjoying.”

They offer three, premium barrel-aged, bottled mixed drinks. Each one a take on true cocktail hall-of-famers.

A cocktail that’s more than a century old, The Negroni traces its roots back to Florence, Italy.

Titan Craft Cocktails took their time experimenting with the classic recipe’s ratios, deciding to double down on the gin to create their bottled cocktail, the Titan Craft Negroni

Herbaceous and bitter, filled with sweet fruitiness, this gin-forward bottled cocktail is barreled and aged in American white oak casks, leaving it ready to enjoy right out of the bottle.

But it’s citrus and juniper notes make it an easy pour to customize as well.

“While I love all of our cocktails,” Jacob assures us, “I find myself polishing off the Boulevardier the most.”

As the name suggests, the Boulevardier is a French cocktail developed in Paris during the 1920s.

Jacob reveals how the Titan Craft Boulevardier came to be, “The choice to add the Boulevardier to our line is also a nod to one of my dearest friends I met in college,” Jacob tells us.

“She worked at a whiskey bar, and through this introduced me to many fantastic whiskeys and whiskey-based cocktails. The boulevardier is her favorite cocktail of all time, and I had to make sure to include it.”

Robust and almost candy like, the Titan Craft Boulevardier is a ready-to-drink cocktail that balances herbal notes with a slight sweetness, offering smooth background hints of vanilla and caramel and just the right amount of bitterness.

Even though the Old Fashioned has been around for almost two hundred years, Jacob promises that you’ve never tasted a bottled mixed drink quite like this.

The Titan Craft Old Fashioned takes an all-time classic recipe and reinvents it as a bottled cocktail fit for modern drinking.

Flavors from the bourbon, sugar and bitters only amplify after resting together in American white oak barrels, releasing earthy aromas and spicy cinnamon notes.

Finding their niche by making the best bottled cocktails

Jacob knows his history. And is mesmerized by it.

“One thing I find absolutely fascinating about the history of mankind is that alcohol, or intentionally fermented beverages, have been traced to as far back as 13,000 years in the past.”

“We have been celebrating these types of beverages for as long as there are records of human activity.”

“It’s truly amazing. With such a deep rooted history of the world, it’s no wonder that different regions have cultivated unique styles of distilled spirits over time.”

That’s where the idea and significance of being local and staying independent with their ready-to-drink cocktails really clicks in for Jacob.

“This is why it is important that we continue this tradition through localized independent distilleries. These types of distilleries keep the heart of their region alive through their spirits.”

The future of ready-to-drink cocktails

For Jacob, sky's the limit for the ready-to-drink cocktails category. He’s already witnessed tremendous advancement there.

“Before Titan Craft Cocktails hit the shelves, you’d mostly only find margaritas and teas in the ready-to-drink aisle.”

“Now we are starting to see some truly fun and exciting cocktails, and I hope we can inspire even more of that.”

He continues, “What sets us apart is the fact that we are one of the very few companies offering barrel-aged cocktails on the market. There are a couple of distilleries who sell maybe a barrel-aged cocktail for the heck of it, but we have created a full line of products with this very concept at an affordable price.”

He’s a man who takes great pride in what he’s accomplished with Titan Craft Cocktails, a man with high hopes for the future of his distillery’s place in the craft spirit movement.

“I want our legacy to be that we paved the way to get more and more creative within the ready-to-drink segment.”

So far, Jacob and Titan Craft Cocktails are well on their way to accomplishing just that with what they consider to be the best bottled cocktails in the world today.
