Joe and MariElena Raya already had successful culinary careers behind them when they founded Tippleman’s. Having graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and opened The Gin Joint in Charleston, South Carolina, the husband and wife team set out another mission. More often than not, the syrups used at the Raya’s pre-Prohibition were handcrafted by Joe and MariElena. With limited space and equipment, making the syrups grew increasingly difficult as the business grew. So, they acquired additional equipment, perfected their processes, and, finally, founded Tippleman’s.
