What is Whiskey Made Of?

Whiskey is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from a mash of fermented cereal grains. Which grains make up that mash is entirely up to the distiller. Some whiskeys are made entirely from corn. Some entirely from wheat. The most popular grains typically used to make whiskey are corn, rye, wheat, and barley.

With the exception of White Whiskeys, most whiskeys are aged in wooden barrels. Generally, those casks are made from American Oak. Some distilleries use different casks that have aged wine or other spirits to impart unique flavors onto their whiskey.

What is the Difference Between Whiskey and Whisky?

When perusing our whiskey selection, you may come across some brands that spell it “Whiskey” and some that say “Whisky.” Typically, it comes down to the spirit’s origin. Whiskeys made in the United States or Ireland are labelled “Whiskey.” But when the brown spirit originates in any other whiskey-making region, including Scotland, Canada, and Japan, it will be labelled “Whisky.”

At the end of the day, they’re all delicious and deserve to take up space on your bar cart.

What are the Most Popular Types of Whiskey?

Rye Whiskey – Made from a mash of at least 51% rye, rye whiskey is known for its signature peppery bite. The spicy whiskey serves as the base for popular cocktails like the Manhattan.

Bourbon Whiskey – A distinct product of the United States, bourbon must be made from a mash of at least 51% corn and be aged in new charred oak barrels.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Made specifically in Scotland, single malt Scotch is made completely from malted barley on location at a single distillery, like the award-winning bottles from DS Tayman.

Flavored Whiskey – When it comes to whiskey flavor infusions, there are no rules. Distilleries use everything from coffee to maple syrup to flavor the spirit, or even peanuts like Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey!

How To Drink Whiskey:

Neat – When you drink whiskey neat, you’re getting the flavor of that spirit completely unadulterated. No ice. No water. No mixers. Just you and the whiskey.

On the Rocks – As a high-alcohol content spirit, some people prefer to dilute their whiskey. Adding an ice cube, referred to as serving whiskey “on the rocks,” will slowly dilute the whiskey as the ice cubes melt.

With Water – Adding a few drops of water to your whiskey helps open the spirit up, releasing and enhancing the flavors that are present. As with whiskey “on the rocks,” adding water will help dilute the potent spirit.
